From Brush to Can: The Spraypaint Portrait

Here’s a little background on my journey to picking up a spray paint can.

My art has evolved so much over the years that it is hard to define exactly when the shifts occurred as I explored different processes. It all brought me to where I am today, and for that I am so thankful!

A few years ago I began my journey as a portrait painter. In case you’ve never tried it, let me tell you that portrait painting requires A LOT of attention to detail. Everyone is expecting that likeness to be just right. The brushes get smaller and smaller as you work towards the finest areas, such as around the eyes. Sometimes, the process can feel very rigid.

I started asking myself how I could bring in more of the spirit of fun and play that I experience when I spend time with my subjects. The best part of portrait painting is hands down the joy of meeting new people and giving the gift of a priceless keepsake.

In order to infuse the portraits with the spirit of the person, I brought in spray paint. The combination of bright colors and spontaneity is just the thing to infuse the portraits with attitude and bring them to life!
